Vampires have lived amongst humans for centuries, always under the radar, hiding in plain sight. They answer only to themselves and the Council of Elders, a worldwide organisation that looks after the interests of the species. Centuries ago, it was decreed by the council that vampires could no longer take human lovers, following the betrayal of one of their own by a human.
