“I’m sorry Sean, but we’re going to have to let you go.”
Sean sat in the uncomfortable conference room chair, the head of Human Resources and his manager sitting across from him. He had been with the magazine just over six months and loved his job. Though he was still fairly new, he’d already had three featured articles published. Way ahead of his peers. Confusion riddled his foggy brain and he started to panic.
“Wait…w-what?” he stuttered.
“Sean, we’ve been forced to reorganize our workforce, making some cutbacks to your department in order to beef up the web content team. You’ve done a great job with us for the short time you’ve been here, but you were the last one hired on the team…”
As she continued to explain the situation and spew out her corporate bullshit, Sean could only focus on all the numbers adding up in his head. He had rent, a car payment, credit card bills, insurance, utilities, groceries, student loans… Oh God, what was he going to do? Paul, his roommate and kinda-boyfriend, would freak out if he couldn’t make the rent. How had he become that guy, the one suddenly unemployed?
When Sean graduated from UC Berkeley seven months ago, his parents had begged him to come back down to Southern California and find a job as a copywriter at one of the huge engineering or aerospace companies. “Stability,” they’d argued. “The only real way to make money as a writer,” they’d reasoned. But he’d decided instead to stay in the Bay Area and work for a small local magazine. The pay was shit and the company still young and not completely stable, but he’d gotten to stay in town—close to his friends and close to Paul. They hadn’t been dating at the time. Hell, they weren’t technically dating now, but Sean hoped it might happen if he stayed close…and he couldn’t get much closer than sharing a junior efficiency apartment with the guy.
“We’re prepared to offer you two weeks’ pay as severance if you’ll sign here.”
Two weeks’ pay, after taxes, was just enough for him to buy a pizza and a six pack of beer. He needed to figure out what to do next. He had some savings, but not much, maybe just enough to tide him over for a short time if he lived on peanut butter and jelly sandwiches.
“We have boxes for you to use to pack up your personal items.”
He’d been there six months and the only personal item he had was the annoying squawking ‘Easy’ button he’d gotten as a white elephant gift from his cubicle mate.
“We wish you the best of luck, Sean. If you need a reference, please direct all requests through HR.”
Sean stood and weakly shook hands with the two people in front of him. As he turned to head back to his desk, he noticed the facilities manager following him. Really? Was the ‘we don’t trust you’ treatment entirely necessary? So much for taking some extra Post-its and gel pens with him on his way out. At his desk, he grabbed his keys and his wallet from the top drawer.
“I’m going to need your office key and your computer password”
“Oh…yeah. Here’s my key fob, and my password is ‘paul123’.”
“You shouldn’t be using consecutive numbers for your passwords.”
“I’ll remember that for my next job,” Sean snapped.
Dejected, panicked, but having just enough pride to keep his head up, Sean left his first real job as an adult, as a real writer, and headed home.
